This was going to be a deep entry about reaching the end of life and wondering if you think about all the things u did or all the things u neglected doing and crap like that -- it was too long, so i did the only reasonable thing and condensed it into a haiku.

watch Age take its toll
minds outlive their own bodies
damn, that sucks big time.

May. 29th, 2006 @ 12:26 am I dont really like being one of those people that only tells stories about work...but...
A female server at work talking with others about going out for a drink the next night, rounds up a team, and then turns to me --

"Matt, do you drink alcohol?"

"No"

"...You're a loser"

May. 20th, 2006 @ 03:09 pm words from a fellow employee
Spoken by a cook i was working with last night on the subject of relationships and love:

"When I was first married my wife and I lived in a tiny, concrete brick house in a married housing unit at the university. We were poor. For Christmas our gift to each other was buying cable. But we were so happy together. After we saved enough money we opened our own restaurant and we were making great money, whatever we wanted to do we could do it; take vacations or buy whatever. and we were miserable.
I guess thats part of falling in love with someone, the excitement and the fun of just imagining all the great things that you can one day do with them. When you actually have teh option to do those things, something gets lost.

So i had an affair and she broke my nose."

"It’s a rare condition, this day and age,
To read any good news on the newspaper page.
Love and tradition of the grand design,
Some people say it’s even harder to find.
Well then there must be some magic clue
Inside these tearful walls

Cause all I see is a tower of dreams
Real love burstin’ out of every seam.
As days go by, we’re gonna fill our house with happiness.
The moon may cry,
We’re gonna smother the blues with tenderness.

When days go by, there’s room for you, room for me,
For gentle hearts an opportunity.
As days go by, It’s the bigger love of the family."

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

Feb. 14th, 2006 @ 03:49 pm Love is Gross.

St Valentine of Rome.
Priest in Rome, possibly a bishop. Physician. Imprisoned for giving aid to martyrs in prison, and while there converted the jailer by restoring sight to the jailer's daughter.

There are several theories about the origin of Valentine's Day celebrations. Some believe the Romans had a mid-February custom where boys drew girls' names in honor of the sex and fertility goddess, Februata Juno; pastors "baptised" this holiday, like some others, by substituting the names of saints such as Valentine to suppress the practice. Others maintain that the custom of sending Valentines on February 14th stems from the belief that birds begin to pair on that date. By 1477 the English associated lovers with the feast of Valentine because on that day "every bird chooses him a mate." The custom started of men and women writing love letters to their Valentine on this day. Other "romance" traditions have become attached to this feast, including pinning bay leaves to your pillow on Valentine's Eve so that you will see your future mate that night in your dreams.
Died
beaten and beheaded c.269 at Rome.  (*Surprised?  I'm not.)
Patronage
affianced couples, betrothed couples, engaged couples, happy marriages, love, lovers, young people, greeting card manufacturers, epilepsy, plague.

Surprise!  No more mystery or air of romance.  You heathens are all celebrating a pagan holiday.  What a crock.

Nov. 24th, 2005 @ 09:11 pm your thoughts?...

a question posed in Schopenhauer's On the Foundations of Morality essay:

"How is it possible that suffering that is niether my own nor of my concern should immediately affect me as though it were my own, and with such force that it moves me to action?... This is something really mysterious, something for which Reason can provide no explanation, and for which no basis can be found in practical experience.  It is not unkown even even to the most hard-hearted and self-interested.  Examples appear every day before our eyes of instant responses of the kind, without reflection, one person helping another, coming to his aid, even setting his own life in clear danger for someone whom he has seen for the first time, having nothing more in mind than that the other is in need and in peril of his life..."
